The first track of this new EP by Manes reminded me of something that
In the Woods... might possibly be doing today if they were still
active; so I was interested to see where Manes would take things for
the remainder of the disc. The answer is that they take it to much
less predictable places than I ever expected, with a mix of
electronic, ambient, post-rock and who knows what else -- with even a
Duran Duran cover of sorts thrown in. The resulting material strikes
me as interesting, boring, enjoyable and silly (usually not all at the
same time) so I guess I should call this a real hit and miss affair,
with some unfortunate emphasis on the latter. Those who feel
instinctively attracted by musical experimentation should definitely
give this a try, while others may prefer safer roads.
