Discordance Axis - _Our Last Day_
(Hydrahead, 2005)
by: Xander Hoose (5.5 out of 10)
For some reason, I've missed out on Discordance Axis for most of my life. I've known and listened to all the great grind bands: Brutal Truth, Blood Duster, S.O.B., Napalm Death -- but never did I come across Discordance Axis. Now that I'm presented with _Our Last Day_, basically a farewell gift from the band to the fans, my curiosity has been awakened enough to track back some older albums and give them a spin. In retrospect, I should have done this much earlier, as I like what I hear. Unfortunately, I can't really say the same about _Our Last Day_.

The album has two 'new' songs ("Sega Bass Fishing" and "Ikaruga"). The rest is made up of covers by Cide Project, Gate, Mortalized, Melt Banana and Grindlink. Merzbow is also present, with a sixteen minute long remix titled "The Inalienable Dreamless". Intriguingly enough, the Merzbow song is the only one really worth listening to on this album. Why? Simple. Cide Project's covers are done with cheap software synths that sound like what a six-year-old kid would do (if he had a synth). The Gate covers are too sloppy for my taste. Mortalized seem to get the idea and come up with two good covers, but that's still less that a minute-and-a-half. The Melt Banana song ("Ulterior") is totally fucked up and even though I love it, it just feels totally out of place. The Noiseear ("Mimetic") and Grindlink ("Naked Pieces Scattered") songs don't pack any punch either.

For die-hard fans, _Our Last Day_ might invoke a smile or two and will fit nicely in their collection. People who just liked what Discordance Axis were doing should stay clear of this album or go for the Merzbow track. That said, I would like to hear Melt Banana do more cover songs on a separate album. Now that might make -me- smile.
