Founded in 1983, Killjoy's Necrophagia is one of the oldest thrash/death bands still in existence. Unlike many other bands from around that time, like Metallica and Anthrax, Killjoy has always stayed true to his beliefs on what makes 'extreme' music. Obsessed with horror, Necrophagia released their first album in 1987, with a few more to follow. 2005 shows Killjoy undertaking a steep learning curve and creating music that is extreme, catchy and surprisingly modern. With some of the riffs (especially in "Dead Skin Slave") very reminiscent of Meshuggah, it's obvious that Killjoy has not let the last fifteen years pass by unnoticed. Where with his sideproject The Ravenous I had some doubts on the validity of the music in this day and age, _Harvest Ritual Volume I_ convinces me from beginning to end. The horror theme is once again heavily present; "Unearthed" and "Cadavera X", with its '80s synth sounds, provide the perfect soundtrack to a brutal zombie flick. Thankfully, the production of _Harvest Ritual Volume I_ is a few notches above the last Killjoy-related albums: while not as heavy as can be, especially in the bass- and drum-wise, the overall sound is satisfactory. Death and horror freaks beware: don't let this new Necrophagia album slip by.
