EverEve - _Regret_
(Nuclear Blast, 1999)
by: Pedro Azevedo (5 out of 10)
Having thoroughly enjoyed EverEve's previous two outputs, _Seasons_ [CoC #20] and _Stormbirds_ [CoC #31], I hoped the band would be able to overcome vocalist Tom Sedotschenko's suicide and produce a worthy third album. New vocalist Ben Richter lacks most of the versatility and especially dark emotion that Sedotschenko's voice had, but unfortunately I doubt any vocalist would have been able to single-handedly save this album anyway. Despite a few reasonably good passages, the songs generally lack the strength, atmosphere and emotion EverEve once had, and are instead excessively bland and generic. The new electronic "enhancements" and increased goth influences in their music are hardly welcome substitutes for the doomy melodies and atmosphere EverEve used to have. The -two- covers of "House of the Rising Sun" don't help much, either. EverEve can never be the same again without Sedotschenko, but while I already expected the vocals to be at least somewhat less enjoyable than before, I never thought the music itself would lose so much of the interest it used to hold.
