Mourning Beloveth - _Formless_
(Grau, 2013)
by: Pedro Azevedo (9 out of 10)
With some albums, you hit play for the first time and five seconds later you already know you're going to like it. Not necessarily because it sounds safe and predictable, but because it sounds straight from the heart, inspired and urgent. _Formless_ turned out to be one of those rare albums for me. While that initial feeling may not always be justified, these masterful Irish doom mongers never faltered for the duration of the ensuing record.

Bones form a recurring theme throughout _Formless_. In addition to the suitably titled opener, "Theories of Old Bones", the word creeps into the narrative on most tracks and never feels tacked on. It echoes a deep weariness -- "a memory of cruel fatigue screams heard bone deep" -- and thoroughly relates to the ponderous music. There is a yearning for an end as much as a new beginning; "tuned to a dead channel in search of a new womb". Eventually this double CD album reaches its lengthy epilogue with "Transitions", wherein mantras straight out of Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" are revisited.

The doom/death that comes out of Mourning Beloveth remains consistently interesting, cohesive and recognizable throughout, even as they explore new paths within their compositions. There is no doubt this is an excellent album for anyone who might be tempted by soulful doom/death with an expert blend of heaviness and melody.
