The Firstborn - _The Noble Search_
(Major Label Industries, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
Before their reincarnation as The Firstborn, this bunch were a black metal project called Firstborn Evil, obsessed by vampires and the occult. After just one album, they abandoned this in favour of Buddhism. The most cursory scan of the lyrics reveals a spiritual philosophy integral to the band's identity, collectively and individually. Their peace-loving beliefs may seem inimical to a violent genre such as metal, but have we not been subjected to far too much juvenile Satanism and half-baked Odinism? Unconventional instruments such as the sitar and other Eastern instruments are used, providing a slight psychedelic feel which is effectively integrated into the metallic corpus. The performance is skilful, with a progressive and technical bent, although a few blackened blasts (vestigial traces of their origins?) surface. A considered and mature album guaranteed to take them closer to musical nirvana.
